The story goes that while listening to a Mother's Day Sermon in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd, of Spokane Washington, decided that it was equally as important for children to recognize the efforts of loving fathers as well. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart after her mother died, Sonora was compelled to show her appreciation for the sacrifices made by Henry. Henry Smart was born in June, so Sonora arranged to celebrate the first Father's Day festivities on June 19, 1910 in Spokane.
Sonora's efforts led to President Calvin Coolidge proclaiming the third Sunday In June as Father's Day in 1924. And in 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
