Dennis Karchner, Artist statement:This oil painting is titled Tom Mix - Hell Bent For Leather 1928, that features the famous silent-era movie cowboy star, Tom Mix. This piece was featured in the TRAVELING THE WEST ART SHOW & SALE in Dallas Texas in October 2015. The photo of Mix that I used as reference was an old black and white with Mix on his Henderson Motorcycle taken in 1928. It was most likely taken where he lived in Oklahoma. The famous Henderson Motorcycles were manufactured in Detroit from 1912 until the coming of the Depression in 1931. The Henderson was used by many police forces in the country because of its speed. Its powerful four cylinder engine could out run anything out there, car or motorcycle at the time.
The classic bi-plane in the background I chose is a famous 1928 Boeing Army 100/P-12 which now resides in the The Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. It is capable of speeds of up 170mph! I decided it was most appropriate to paint Mix and the Boeing racing through Monument Valley, Arizona.
An important side note of why I picked Mix is that he was born in Medix Run, Pennsylvania on January 6, 1880, a few miles away from where I grew up in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. The little town of Medix Run is located near the city of DuBois. For years you could look down from the Rt. 144 highway and see the old foundation of his original homestead which burned down many years ago. Funds were raised not long ago to rebuild the house and create a Tom Mix Museum there. My Mom, Elaine, a Mix fan as well, donated a couple of pieces of baby furniture to the cause. One other 1928 connection is my Mom, Elaine, who was born that same year is why I’m dedicating this painting to her. Love you Mom!!
I'll tell you a few more facts about Tom that I thought are worth mentioning. Tom was one of the pallbearers at the funeral of Wyatt Earp. Back in the day, someone had written that they actually saw the tough hearted Tom Mix wiping away a tear. Tom died October 12, 1940 in Florence, Arizona while driving his now famous pale yellow, custom Cord Phaeton convertible. His small, metal makeup suitcase flew up from the back seat on impact and hit him in the back of the head. Witnesses on a construction site, who he was trying to avoid hitting, said that he actually jumped out of the car after it stopped like he was just fine, to fall over dead a few seconds later. Lastly, probably my most favorite album is The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It appears that the Beatles were big fans of Tom Mix as well. His cutout graces that very cover with all the other who’s whos.
The painting is traditional oils on museum grade Ampersand Gessobord Masonite. This took a total of 100 plus hours to complete.

Just recently, Denny had the extreme pleasure of meeting a man, well known and well loved by many in Cody, his name, Sheldon Hanson. He was 70 years of age at the time of this painting. Sheldon actually lives right across the river from “Castle Rock.” As you look out the front window of Denny’s home on the Lower South Fork of the Shoshone River, which faces southwest, you see the famous landmark, called “Castle Rock” about three miles away. It juts up from the valley floor and stands all by itself. It rises several hundred above the floor of the valley. “Castle Rock” actually climbs to 6,010 feet (1,831.85 meters) above sea level. The ranch sits at about 5300 feet above sea level to give you an idea how high it is. As the “Castle Rock” sign says: “John Colter, famed among the famous breed of Mountain Men, passed this landmark late in the fall of 1807 while on business for the fur trader Manual Lisa. Searching for Indians in order to conduct trade, he also hunted salt caves reputedly located near the headwaters of this stream then known as the ‘stinking water.’ On his journey, Colter not only discovered this later named Shoshone River but he also became the first recorded white man to visit the upper Wind River, Jackson’s Hole and Yellowstone Park. His lonely trek, compounding the normal dangers of savage wilderness by mid winter passage of a broad and lofty mountain range, lives in history and legend an epic of fortitudinous exploration.” There is a lot of other history that is based around this famous landmark. This is a "pencil" of the cocky, flamboyant and brave, golden-haired George Armstrong Custer. A general at 23, he was one of the Union's most celebrated cavalrymen. By 1865, the time of this reference photo by Civil War Photographer Matthew Brady, he had seen action in most engagements in the eastern theater. A subordinate described Custer as "the idol, as well as the idol of his men, the foremost cavalry officer of his time."With a showdown battle in Pennsylvania anticipated, the colorful 23 year-old George Armstrong Custer was jumped past most of his peers and made a brigadier general by George G. Meade. After Gettysburg, Custer fought other battles. Aside from his Civil War service, he is best known for his defeat and death at the Little Bighorn River on June 25, 1876. This is a postwar portrait, since Custer did not display the insignia of a major general until after April 15, 1865.

This is a "pencil" of "Little Bird" an Arapaho which was drawn using a photograph for reference taken by photographer, Frank A. Rinehart.What an honor, Karchner recently received an email from Little Bird's great granddaughter Loretta Little Bird Steele. She was able to shed some light on her great grandfather. She said the portrait of Little Bird was taken at the TransMississippi & International Exposition in 1898.
There are a couple things about this portrait worth noting. Very strangely, "Little Bird" is wearing a crucifix around his neck. The other thing worth mentioning, it looks like he is wearing a political pin on his lapel. Loretta Little Bird Steele believes the picture is of William McKinley (1843-1901) who was president 1897 to 1901. What a great face and a fantastic study!

This is a pencil of "Freckled Face," an Arapaho Indian. She is also the wife of "Little Bird", one of Karchners' other studies. Photographer Frank A. Rinehart (1862-1928) took the photo used for reference. The photograph was taken in the year 1898.A beautiful woman in her own right, "Freckled Face's" ceremonial cape is very unique in the fact that is covered with elk teeth. The eyeteeth from an elk are one of the very few sources of ivory in the world. There are over 225 teeth that are visible in this "pencil," meaning that there are probably well over 500 teeth sewed to her cape. The ivories from an elk are still highly desirable and collectable for ornate jewelry and other uses.

Plenty Coups was a Crow Chief and visionary leader. He allied Crow with the whites when the war for the West was being fought, because the Sioux and Cheyenne (who were opposing white settlement of the area) were the traditional enemies of the Crow. Plenty Coups had also had a vision when he was very young that non-Native people would ultimately take control of his homeland (Montana), so he always felt that cooperation would benefit his people much more than opposition.One of his famous quotes is: "With education you are the white man's equal, without education you are his victim and so shall remain all of your lives. Study, learn, help one another always. Remember there is only poverty and misery in idleness and dreams - but in work there is self respect and independence."
He very much wanted the Crow to continue as a people and their customs and spiritual beliefs to carry on. His efforts on their behalf ensured that this happened.
He was the principal chief of the Mountain Crows, or the Apsáalooke, of the Crow Nation.

This stunning model is our friend, Sasha Livingston. She is part Apache and was born and raised in Cody, Wyoming. She now works and resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado. At the time of my painting she is 26 years old. I met her through her mother, Nabu Livingston. Chances has it, when you are always wearing your favorite Pittsburgh Steelers garb, you're bound to run into other well-dressed fans which is what happened. Nabu and her friend were all decked out in the Steelers colors! We all stopped to chat in Cody one day and discuss our common bond. She said her daughter was a die-hard Steelers fan as well. It came up that I was an artist for Steelers Vice-President Art Rooney, Jr. and a western artist. She immediately said, you need to meet my daughter, she would be the perfect model. Frankly, I hear this a lot. Everyone knows someone for me to paint. Several weeks later, I found out Nabu's words to be very true!! Sasha came into town for a visit and we immediately set up a photo shoot with Leigh doing the honors with Nabu helping to get Sasha all ready.Sasha is wearing a hand made leather, Apache wedding dress designed by Nabu and made by her close friend, Nancy Snow. The detail on the beautiful hand-made, beaded choker is second to none! Lastly, the custom horn handled knife was made by a really close friend of Nabu. One of his last wishes was that the knife go to Nabu after he passed on. What a keepsake!
I want to thank Sasha for giving me the opportunity to sit for us. Thanks to Nabu for making it all happen. Thanks to Leigh for always making my paintings the best ever, and lastly, I thank God for giving me the help getting my eyes back to where I can paint beauties like Sasha again.

Here is Denny's latest piece. It is titled Cheyenne Moon. The model's name is Danny Reyes. Denny's very good friend, Andrew Hogarth, photographer/writer/storyteller from Australia took the outstanding reference photograph that he used to create this painting. Andrew, in his own words describes how it all happened:"In early August 1992, Kim, my wife and I attended the private Cheyenne Powwow at Colony, Oklahoma. We had been invited by John Sipes, Jr. the Cheyenne Tribal/Historian. The year before Kim and I had worked with John on our booklet Cheyenne Hole: The Story of the Sappa Creek Massacre, 23rd April, 1875. The Grand Entry for the powwow was 7:00 pm and by that time it was dusk and nearly no light at all. About twenty to seven, as the dancers were making their way to the arbour, I spotted this ghostlike figure appear from the crowd in the camp. I quickly walked up to the young traditional dancer and asked if I could snap a couple of images on film. The young man nodded and I shot the two images. He later said his name was Danny Reyes from the Cheyenne Nation. When I developed the film on the Monday I found one of the two images were badly blurred and the second images sharp but still a touch blurred. Still it was good enough was inclusion in my first exhibition collection 'Native Lands: The West Of The American Indian.' This image was highlighted in the Native Lands showing at the Jackson Hole Museum during The Falls Arts festival in September, 1996. I met with Danny again at Colony in 1996 and we created the second set of images with his new regalia. I asked him about his regalia from 1992 and he said that during a dinner break at a powwow in Albuquerque it was stolen."
Denny would like to point out something in this painting that he didn't notice until after he was about half way through the painting. If you look closely, check out the gold painted shape on Danny's face. It is very cleverly painted to represent a crescent moon using his actual eye and nose, giving us the title that Andrew and Denny came up with, Cheyenne Moon.

This fine young man is Native American, Jay Eagle from Bullhead, South Dakota. Jay is Hunkpapa/Oglala Lakota and lives on the Standing Rock Reservation. Denny's good friend Andrew Hogarth from Sydney, Australia that is a world-famous photographer, took the first-class photograph that he used for his reference. His work has appeared in many, many national publications. Matter of fact, the photo has graced several magazine covers and other publications. This photo of Jay was taken in 1996 at the annual Crow Fair on land surrounding the Little Big Horn River near Billings, Montana. With regards to his powwow dancing, Jay has won close to two hundred 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards. Jay still has all the envelopes that his prize money was handed to him on those particular days.Denny also wants to mention, Andrew has been asked many times by many artists to paint his images. Denny is the first artist that Andrew has asked to paint one of his grand images! Denny was truly honored!

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Defensive End, Brett Keisel from Greybull, Wyoming. Denny posed him where he hunts, which is up on the famous Carter Mountain Range. This is located right above where Denny lived in Cody, Wyoming. He and his father Lane, have hunted this area for many years. Matter of fact, this is the very area that Denny hunted in as well. It's absolute God's Country with a view that is second to none!Around Brett's neck is a grizzly bear claw necklace along with turquoise and bone necklaces as well. He is holding an original "Lancaster" muzzleloader rifle that was made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It is almost 200 years old.

One little side note, if you look close, you will see a small pair of buffalo tracks after Denny's signature. This is to commemorate Brett's High School mascot and Denny's company name, Buffalo Graphics.

Sheldon Hanson of Cody, Wyoming, The Sentinel of Southfork, is of one of Denny's best friends and hunting buddy. Sheldon lives in the famous valley where the Southfork of the Shoshone River flows. The river flows north to join the Northfork and forms the main branch of the Shoshone River that flows through Cody. This beautiful valley was used as a pathway by many famous mountain men including John Colter and Jeremiah Johnson to conduct their fur trade business. The valley was the main route north to Montana from the Jackson Hole area.All that know Sheldon think that this great man stands guard over this beautiful Southfork Valley as if it were his own for each and everyone to enjoy!
Denny had Sheldon pose in an old, full length, buffalo skin robe. He was wearing a full coyote skin cap while holding his favorite flintlock rifle.

The title of Denny's newest piece is "Over The Great Divide." For those who don't know, the Continental or the "Great Divide" in the Americas is the line that divides the flow of water between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Rain or snow that drains on the east side of the Continental Divide flows toward the Atlantic Ocean while precipitation on the west side drains and flows toward the Pacific Ocean. The continental divide runs from northwestern Canada along the crest of the Rocky Mountains to New Mexico. Then, it follows the crest of Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental. In South America, the Continental Divide lies along the Andes.The "Great Divide" runs from the north though the center of Yellowstone National Park and right atop these massive mountains that I have behind Sheldon and his horse. The "Tetons" were named by the early French fur traders that thought when they first saw them that they reminded them of womens' breasts! Thus the name, "Grand Tetons!" The Tetons rise 13,770 feet above sea level from the valley floor which is already 6,530 feet above sea level. The piece is traditional oils on "museum-grade" Masonite.
