This fine young man is Native American, Jay Eagle from Bullhead, South Dakota. Jay is Hunkpapa/Oglala Lakota and lives on the Standing Rock Reservation. Denny's good friend Andrew Hogarth from Sydney, Australia that is a world-famous photographer, took the first-class photograph that he used for his reference. His work has appeared in many, many national publications. Matter of fact, the photo has graced several magazine covers and other publications. This photo of Jay was taken in 1996 at the annual Crow Fair on land surrounding the Little Big Horn River near Billings, Montana. With regards to his powwow dancing, Jay has won close to two hundred 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards. Jay still has all the envelopes that his prize money was handed to him on those particular days.Denny also wants to mention, Andrew has been asked many times by many artists to paint his images. Denny is the first artist that Andrew has asked to paint one of his grand images! Denny was truly honored!

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Defensive End, Brett Keisel from Greybull, Wyoming. Denny posed him where he hunts, which is up on the famous Carter Mountain Range. This is located right above where Denny lived in Cody, Wyoming. He and his father Lane, have hunted this area for many years. Matter of fact, this is the very area that Denny hunted in as well. It's absolute God's Country with a view that is second to none!Around Brett's neck is a grizzly bear claw necklace along with turquoise and bone necklaces as well. He is holding an original "Lancaster" muzzleloader rifle that was made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It is almost 200 years old.
This painting is traditional oils on museum-grade Masonite. The finished size is 18" x 24".
One little side note, if you look close, you will see a small pair of buffalo tracks after Denny's signature. This is to commemorate Brett's High School mascot and Denny's company name, Buffalo Graphics.

Sheldon Hanson of Cody, Wyoming, The Sentinel of Southfork, is of one of Denny's best friends and hunting buddy. Sheldon lives in the famous valley where the Southfork of the Shoshone River flows. The river flows north to join the Northfork and forms the main branch of the Shoshone River that flows through Cody. This beautiful valley was used as a pathway by many famous mountain men including John Colter and Jeremiah Johnson to conduct their fur trade business. The valley was the main route north to Montana from the Jackson Hole area.All that know Sheldon think that this great man stands guard over this beautiful Southfork Valley as if it were his own for each and everyone to enjoy!
Denny had Sheldon pose in an old, full length, buffalo skin robe. He was wearing a full coyote skin cap while holding his favorite flintlock rifle.

The title of Denny's newest piece is "Over The Great Divide." For those who don't know, the Continental or the "Great Divide" in the Americas is the line that divides the flow of water between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Rain or snow that drains on the east side of the Continental Divide flows toward the Atlantic Ocean while precipitation on the west side drains and flows toward the Pacific Ocean. The continental divide runs from northwestern Canada along the crest of the Rocky Mountains to New Mexico. Then, it follows the crest of Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental. In South America, the Continental Divide lies along the Andes.The "Great Divide" runs from the north though the center of Yellowstone National Park and right atop these massive mountains that I have behind Sheldon and his horse. The "Tetons" were named by the early French fur traders that thought when they first saw them that they reminded them of womens' breasts! Thus the name, "Grand Tetons!" The Tetons rise 13,770 feet above sea level from the valley floor which is already 6,530 feet above sea level. The piece is traditional oils on "museum-grade" Masonite.

This is Dustin Roush from Gillette, Wyoming. Dustin posed in July of 2006 at the DC Bar Guest Ranch, Denny's friend's guest ranch in Pinedale, Wyoming. Dustin and his family operate a very large beef cattle ranch in Gillette. Dustin was completing "guide school" classes so he can work as a licensed guide in the state. Dustin is a "master" with a lasso. He was giving lessons to all the other students. What a great kid he is as well as a pure gentleman. Dave is a well-known local around Cody, Wyoming. Dave is a master "leather-smith" as well as a master "gunsmith." Mr. Behling is a member of the "Single Action Shooting Society." The "society" was organized to preserve the "western style of shooting." All the members have aliases and a badge number. Dave's alias is "Buck Elliott," badge number 6177. Denny's wife, Leigh, his reference photographer, took a fantastic photograph of this massive buffalo bull plodding through the famous Hayden Valley of Yellowstone September, 2004. This is another of Denny's good friends that he met awhile back. His name is Gene Hartung. Gene was soon-to-be 72 years old at the time of this painting. Gene lives right across the Buffalo Bill Dam near Denny. He happened into Denny's store/gallery awhile back and Leigh, Denny's wife and photographer, immediately asked him if he would pose for Denny. He told her a story of how Denny's mentor, James Bama, had asked him the same question several years ago and how he had agreed to pose for James to take photos also. What a shame Bama never painted him! His loss was Denny's gain. Denny actually posed him in the exact same clothes that Bama did, except for his shirt.Gene had a favorite saddle as a young cowboy. It became completely worn out and is now gone. Since the Bama shoot, Gene took up saddle-making. He wanted to make an exact copy of his saddle, and that he set out to do. He had never made a saddle before. As he worked totally from memory, he actually made four versions of the saddle until he was happy with the fourth one. He sold the other three saddles. One went to a buyer in England. He was so proud of his saddle. Denny just had to pose him with it!! What a thing of beauty!!
Since the painting, Gene revealed a little more about what he was wearing. He said that he had not only had made his own saddle, he made his vest, his pistol holster, his chaps and lastly his bone necklace. If you look closely, you will see hanging from the small center metal concho on that necklace is a strand of horsehair. Gene owned, many, many racehorses. His most favorite racehorse eventually died a few years back. This is a small piece from his beloved horse " Red Eagle's" tail. What a tribute!

This portrait of Jim Dunham, Director of Special Projects of the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, GA, is the third in the S.A.S.S. series in oils. He refers to himself as "Kid Rio," the name on his S.A.S.S. badge. Jim is one of the oldest members and one of the first to join S.A.S.S. some twenty years ago. For those of you who haven't seen the last two paintings of the S.A.S.S. members, the "Single Actions Shooting Society" is an international organization created to preserve and promote the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. S.A.S.S. members share a common interest in preserving the history of the Old West and competitive shooting.Denny had the privilege of meeting Jim at the museum while visiting October, 2005 while delivering the two pieces of art the museum requested for placement in their permanent collection at the Booth. There was something quite special about Jim. He is also an artist. He, along with another guy at the museum who reads stories of the old west, portrays the famous western artist, "Charles Russell." While the reading progresses, Jim draws really great rough sketches that Charles Russell was so famous for.

A "circuit," nowadays is called a "charge," was a geographical area that encompassed two or more local churches. Local Methodist pastors would met with their bishops annually for appointment to either a new circuit or remain at the same one, most often they were moved to another circuit. Once a pastor was assigned a circuit, it was his responsibility to visit each church in his charge at least once a year in addition to possibly erecting new churches. Because of the long distance between churches, the preachers would ride on horseback. They were called "circuit riders" or "saddlebag preachers." They traveled with few possessions, carrying only what would fit in their saddlebags. They traveled through wilderness and villages, they preached every day at any place available such as peoples' cabins, courthouses, fields, meeting houses, later, even basements and street corners. Unlike preachers of settled denominations, Methodist preachers were always on the move (most circuits were so large that it would take 5 to 6 weeks to cover their assignment). This is what boosted Methodism into the largest Protestant denomination at the time; bringing the church to the common people.Denny's model for this painting was the first rider out in the 2006 Annual Mountain Man Rendezvous in Pinedale Wyoming. He was so striking and stood out from all the other actors as he approached on a beautiful "Blue Roan." The horse appeared to be all black (actually black hair with silver mixed in) that matched the man's all black regalia from hat to boots. The man just blew Denny away! Denny turned to Leigh and made the quick statement, "that preacher is a painting for sure." The man even nodded at them as if he knew on his last ride by them. After the event they announced that most of the actors would be available for photographs. Denny made a beeline straight over to the man. It was spitting rain the whole time and the sky looked like it would open anytime. After an introduction, the rain stopped but the grey sky remained. The man was so gracious to pose in whatever position asked of him. As Denny directed the shots, he asked him to look back over his right shoulder. The photographer's reaction to the two-second preview in her camera's preview screen confirmed it was going to be "the shot."
It wasn't until weeks later that the title came to Denny while listening to Don Henley of the Eagles singing the lyrics to "The Last Resort." The spiritual song is about the settlers moving across the plains seeking and praying for the next "paradise." Denny was studying the photograph of the circuit preacher as the song played. It was at that moment that it hit him. There was a reason that he had asked for the "look over the shoulder." The title came to him suddenly like a revelation.
Proudly presented to you, Festus Krause of Cora, Wyoming. Festus was playing the part the famous "Marcus Wittman," circa 1860-1870 "Circuit Rider." Festus was actually a rancher and worked the oil fields outside of Pinedale, Wyoming at that time. Festus was a "class-act." Even though he was not a "real" preacher, he is a man to be well respected.

One of Denny's latest painting is from his wife, Leigh's, photo shoot with a Native American Indian at the Mountain Man Rendezvous in Pinedale, WY. He is pictured here with his horse, "Apache," photographed in July 2006. The subject is an accomplished Actor, Stuntman, Authenticity Expert and Technical Consultant for nearly 50 motion pictures including "Dances With Wolves" and "Last of the Mohicans." His journeys have taken him all across the USA where he teaches, lectures and informs the curious public on Plains Indian history, culture, and corrects may of the myths and untruths propagated and compounded by generations of television and inaccurate historical portrayal. His mission is to undo the misunderstandings about the Native Americans from history and show the kinder, gentler side of their survival as a culture. He was kind enough to pose for Denny while he was there giving lectures on the Plains Indians history during the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous.All the clothing, regalia, props, jewelry and such are hand-made to help explain, educate and nullify myths and legends about the Plains Indians history through demonstration, story-telling and careful and accurate responses to questions posed by his audiences. This model has posed and been painted for the last 30 plus years by well-known western artists such as Frank McCarthy, James Bama, Howard Terpning.
In this image, the subject is dressed in authentic Comanche (time period 1870's) buffalo skin coat, leggings, smock, and an otter hair hat. He is holding a US-made rifle designed especially for trade to the Indians. The stock of the U.S. government-issued rifle is covered with brass decorative tacks. There were mittens hanging around his neck (not shown here) that are also made of soft leather and were designed so that the trigger finger is gloved alone while the remaining fingers are together. The trigger guards on the specially made rifles were designed with a large opening to allow for this single gloved finger. It would be hard to feel the trigger or accurately judge the pressure on the trigger with an entire hand covered by a single mitten with only the thumb free. A lot of planning and effort went into making and trading items between the trades-people and the Native Americans.
Denny's portrayal here is in full winter dress and, indicative of the harsh winter months suffered by the Plains Indians. This piece, appropriately titled, "First Snow," is the first in an on-going series of this particular subject. Denny forwarded a .jpg of this painted image to him. Much to his surprise, he responded right away and not only conveyed how much he was moved by this piece but also offered a trade of future modeling or other such services in exchange for the original. This man has been photographed and painted by many artists over the years and he states he has never requested an original before this one! Denny was so humbled and honored at this request... he was truly moved and speechless at such a compliment.

This was the second in Denny's Native America series, titled "The Courter." The subject is portraying a Northern Cheyenne, circa 1860-1870 and is "looking for a bride." Portrayed, he is wearing an eagle feather war bonnet trimmed with row-after-row of Italian glass beadwork that the Native Americans traded for. Above the beads is a row of small bells. The sides of the war bonnet have rows of long, white ermine hides, otherwise known as weasel. The sleeves and sections of the front of Michael's shirt are also trimmed with hundreds of rows of ochre and turquoise glass beads. Lining his shoulders and the back of his arms are rows of human hair strands, held tightly by metal beads.He wears a bright red, white and blue blanket wrapped around his waist. The blanket is one like those the U.S. Government gave the Indian Chiefs of that time. Just out of sight, on his chest, is a "Presidential Peace" medal, also given to the Indian Chiefs. Lastly, the fan he is portrayed holding was made from immature eagle feathers. Hanging from it are more ermine furs and leather thongs that are below his right hand. The subject hand-made all the authentic regalia that he is shown wearing.
